Margaret Mahy Trip

Ki ora and welcome back to another blog post and today I will sharing with you my amazing town trip to Margaret Mahy.

On the 20th of May Tumu went to Margaret Mahy and I will be sharing with you today what we did.

We learnt about patterns, Waka, Margaret Mahy, Victoria Square, Tuna and mats. First we went to the mats we learnt that there is a story behind them about there of them they all told a story but they all looked different because of the stories. Second we went on the Waka and it was very fun but hard and tiring at the same time. We did two laps around the Avon river but we stopped four time to have a little break on the waka. Third we went to Victoria Square there were more patterns and mats there as well a the big fountains around victoria square. We did a scavenger hunt to find facts and things we know. Finally we went to look at the pictures and the song written on the side walk right next to the playground.

My favourite part of the trip was the Waka. We got to go around the Avon river by saying HE HA! . It was really fun because we were using paddles on the waka. It was very triering at the time but it was worth it.

Something I learnt was Margaret Mahy family playground (or takaro a poi) I learnt that there a songs carved in the long side walk and some stories behind some things in Margaret Mahy like the mats and how the Māori used the Waka.

The thing I found the most interesting was that before the earthquakes(2011) it was a trading place for the Maori by using the waka to get to different places. Also in Victoria Square had patterns around.

This trip has helped me with my PBL because I learnt a lot of things about the Māori culture and iwi and it relates to our PBL question turangawaewae (or a place to stand)
